Topics to be discussed include the Tokugawa shogunate, the Meiji Restoration, the rise of imperialism, the creation of an empire, World War II, the dropping of the atom bomb, and Japan's postwar recovery. Emphasis is placed not only on the history of Japan but also on Japanese culture and how it has interacted with the outside world over the years. Prerequisite: 3 semester hours of history.
