This course acquaints the student with both prose and poetry written by African-Americans as an integral part of the American literary tradition. Beginning with mythical, symbolic, and oral traditions in Africa, the course will explore their influence on African-American literature from 1750 to the present, with a particular focus on 20th century litera-ture.
