This course acquaints the student with both prose and poetry written by African-Americans as an integral part of the American literary tradition. Beginning with mythical, symbolic, and oral traditions in Africa, the course will explore their influence on African-American literature from 1750 to the present, with a particular focus on 20th century litera-ture. The importance of literature as a reflec-tion of the African experience in America will be stressed. [AREA 4] Prerequisites: ENG 101 and 102
