This course provides an overview of family counseling including major theories, tenets of the model, techniques and clinical applications. It is designed to present an overview so that the addictions therapist becomes aware of signs of family dysfunction and can make appropriate referrals. Taking this course does not quality one to do family counseling. Specific modalities useful in the substance abusing family include psycho educational approaches. Alanon and Alateen will be discussed. The last 4 hours of this class focuses on domestic abuse in the substance abusing family.
