This course fosters an understanding of major works of Japanese literature and cinema, both traditional and contemporary. Drawing upon novels, dramas, poetry, and film, it examines how these genres reflect Japanese ethics, aesthetics, and samurai and commoner societies in the Edo period. Furthermore, the course explores the influence on contemporary literature of Westernization in the postwar period, and reconciliation of individual expression with group conformity in today's society.
