3 credits (fall and spring) This introductory course provides an overview of hardware architecture, software, procedures, system concepts and relationships, cost/value and quality of information, input/output, storage, distributed processing, networking, basics of creating Web pages, computer security and risks, Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. As an important part of this course, students will be introduced to the following issues: ethical use of computers, standards of information age conduct, Online Outlaws: computer crime, identity theft; impact of computers on social relationships, censorship and digital divide; understanding culture and society in relation to computers; computer and globalization, diversity; conducting research using online resources; and critical thinking.
