Major themes include the construction of gender,the notion of the primitive, expression, approaches to abstraction,responses to the city, art and politics in the 1930s, and the post-WorldWar II cultural shift from Europe to America. Aspects of modernismas an international phenomenon will be addressed by reference towork from the urban centers of Europe, central Europe and Russia,the USA, South America, and Asia.
