3 credits (fall even year) Prerequisites: EL102 (C- grade or better), the equivalent or permission of the instructor. This course provides an introduction to United States poetry, oral narrative, prose, and drama from pre-colonial times to the Civil War. Emphasis is placed on situating texts in their cultural, social, and historical contexts. Course material will include texts by well known writers, such as Emily Dickinson and Herman Melville, as well as works by lesser known writers.
