Fall, Spring Lab fee will be required. The studentwill be assigned to the pediatric unit to develop proficiency with the problems and diseases that are unique to children; to the pediatric intensive care unit to provide ventilator management of the critically ill child with emphasis on arterial blood gas monitoring and stabilization of the pediatric patient, and the neonatal intensive care unit. This will provide the student with the clinical experience of neonatal ventilator management with emphasis on arterial blood-gas interpretation, complications and side effects of mechanical ventilation, infant transport, airway care, and disease pathophysiology. Close supervision will be maintained for the entire rotation. This course is open only to matriculated Respiratory Care students or those with permission of the department chairperson. A letter grade of "C" or better is required for graduation. Prerequisites: RESP 125, Fundamentals of Respiratory Care II; RESP 200, Advanced Respiratory Life Support.
