Veterinary Applications of Strategic Planning, Financial Planning, and Marketing - This course is a lecture-format class that focuses on the particular applications of strategic planning, financial planning, and marketing to veterinary animal hospitals and research-animal facilities. Students use the theories and information gained in priciples of marketing, strategic management, and the financial courses they have taken and apply them to real-life veterinary- practice examples. Instructor-designed scenarios as well as actual veterinary-practice examples are used to challenge students' analytical skills. Highlights include how to format your strategic plan, what the components of a strategic plan are, action lists that will help initiate and accomplish a strategic plan, and step-by-step instructions for achieving results. Tracking hospital profit/loss, managing payroll, running reports, paying taxes and other bills, budgeting and long-range planning as well as setting fees and handling the day-to-day operations and financial concerns of an animal hospital are covered. Marketing topics include how to develop a niche in the veterinary market, how to sell, and how to use marketing techniques in animal hospitals. Exploring the use of the Internet for marketing will be pursued as well.
