This course introduces students to an overall examination of the religious institution in society, with an emphasis on conditions in contemporary United States. Topics include, but are not limited to, origins of the institution, religious socialization, religious structures, religious conflict, class and gender in religion, and changes in the institution. Students taking SOCI 220 will do so concurrently with students taking SOCI 320. In addition to the requirements of SOCI 220, students enrolled in SOCI 320 will also complete a research component. This research will be either a library-oriented study or a field project, either of which must be approved by the instructor. Students who have completed Sociology of Religion may not retake it at another level.
