The Water Safety Instructor course provides training for the instructor candidate to teach American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety courses. The instructor course is designed to serve a variety of purposes including: teaching aquatic skills, addressing issues in the teaching environment, improving teaching skills, developing course planning skills, and learning administrative procedures. Prerequisites: An instructor candidate must be proficient in certain safety and aquatic skills, including the following: 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke; 15 yards of the butterfly; maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water, tread water 1 minute.
