Institution:
Miami University-Hamilton
Subject:
Description:
Russia since 1855 has been a reforming, then a reactionary authoritarian monarchy; a revolutionary state with a messianic urge to change the world; an industrial and military giant; the site of massive internal violence; the victor over Nazi Germany in World War II; the other superpower in the Cold War; and recently a place of wild, uneven economic development powered by vast oil reserves. This course explores the profound, sometimes baffling changes Russia has experienced since the mid-19th century.
