This course covers the increasing technical knowledge of operating system architecture and improving applied software testing techniques for desktop- and server-based applications. The course provides an overview of the operating system architecture, its shell and user interface, and 32 bit-based applications. Topics include user interface components, the Registry, virtual machine and virtual machine manager, memory management, cooperative versus preemptive multi-tasking, message-driven applications, service-based processes, plug-and-play, dynamic linking library (DLL), user, GDI and kernel resources, object linking and embedding (OLE) documents, OLE automation, and custom controls (VBX, OCS/ActiveX, etc., COM and DCOM objects). Students will learn other software testing techniques such as how to create useful test plans, test matrices and decision tables. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: CIS 2321.
