Students concentrate on isolation of natural products (eugenol from cloves) and chemical synthesis: cis- 1, 2-cyclohexanediol, a multistep synthesis of sulfanilamide, sodium borohydride reduction of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol, preparation of a Grignard reagent (phenylmagnesium bromide), Grignard synthesis of iodobenzene, Diels-Alder synthesis of 4-cyclohexene-1, 2-dicarboxylic acid anhydride.
