Description:
This course provides supervised placement in a non-classroom setting at a healthcare facility, medical office or other appropriate site. This experience enables the student to synthesize and apply concepts and skills learned in the Medical Assisting program. Four credits are earned by the student upon the completion of a minimum of 160 hours to a maximum of 200 hours of Externship experience. The Externship experience is divided evenly between clinical and administrative areas to permit student involvement in the total environment of the facility. Each student is required to perform unaided blood collections in a facility under the supervision of a preceptor. The phlebotomy experience may take place in a hospital, ambulatory care center or other appropriate facility where the number and variety of patients provide ample experience. In addition, six hours of classroom seminars held at the College are required during the semester. Clinical affiliations are arranged with physician's offices and outpatient clinics, under contractual agreements set up by the College. The one semester externship in medical assisting (MED 289) is the clinical experience for the program.
