Prerequisite: ENGL 111 - English I. Shakespeare on the Page and on the Screen is an interdisciplinary, team-taught course that studies plays of William Shakespeare from both literary and cinematic perspectives. Students will read selected comedies, tragedies, and histories by Shakespeare in conjunction with exemplary film versions of these plays, both classic (by directors like Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles) and recent (by directors like Kenneth Branagh and Trevor Nunn). The themes explored in this course include: poetic language and cinematic language, Shakespearean imagery on the page and on the screen, and Shakespeare in a modern, multicultural context. Students who complete this course will have a fuller understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare's plays and the medium that most frequently delivers him to audiences today.
