Course fee $60 A basic introduction to the world of microbial life and how microorganisms influence and impact everything from medicine to environmental issues to global politics. Gain an appreciation and understanding of the benefits and risks of sharing this planet with more than a million different types of microorganisms that existed over several billion years before us and understand who is winning the battle of continued survival. Emerging infectious disease topics will be discussed as well as vaccines and antibiotic resistance. This is offered as a hybrid course in which approximately half of the class time is spent outside of the classroom with faculty-guided assignments based on internet-streaming videos and activities followed by weekly meetings in class discussing topics related to the videos and performing related laboratory exercises.
