Prerequisite: none This course is a survey of the artistic history and legacy of the native people of Africa, North America, and the Pacific Islands. Students will examine specific artistic styles and contrasts in painting, sculpture, and architecture as influenced by the cultural, social, political, and religious aspects from each indigenous group. Field trips to the following Smithsonian Institution Museums in Washington, DC are part of the class experience: National Museum of African Art, Museum of the American Indian, and Museum of Natural History. Offered during alternating semesters, usually in the spring.
