3 hours. Prerequisite: ENGL 1102 with a grade of "C" or better. A survey of important works of American literature. Designed to foster in the student some knowledge and appreciation of American literature from the mid-nineteenth century (civil war) through the present. Lectures, discussions, and research focus on major figures, works, and movements in historical context, with special attention to themes and techniques of literary analysis and to the influence of philosophical and religious views on the literature. Fall, Spring, Summer.
