(Formerly SPA 2250) 3 credits, 3 hours Pre-requisite: SPA 222 or SPA 202 or by placement This course follows the lives of Eugenio María de Hostos and José Martí througtheir literature, their endeavors, achievements and contributions to the struggles for freedom, education and progress in the Americas. Students will read, analyze, discuss and gain an understanding of these authors' major works in a historical, political, and literary context. Students will study Hostos and Martí's historical presence in New York City in the later part of the 19th century, and their activism for the self-determination and social development of their peoples. Students will also gain an appreciation for similarities and differences between these two important writers, and will explore their legacies to Latin American and Latino intellectual and political pursuits.
