Four hours lecture per week. UC/CSU Prerequisite: BIOL 177 C and CHEM 211AC. This course presents mechanisms of gene expression and its regulation at the transcriptional and translational levels in eukaryotic and prokaryotic systems. The structure and biosynthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, as well as the importance of viral life cycles in understanding basic cellular processes, will be included. The major biochemical pathways in cells, with an emphasis on the thermodynamic constraints on living systems, will also be studied.
