A general introduction to the concepts of cultural diversity in the United States, including the various histories of oppression of minority groups. Readings and sensitivity exercises related to African-American, Appalachian, and Hispanic/Latino cultures. An introduction to the concepts of cultural competence with visits to social service agencies serving diverse populations. In-class exercises and community visits related to vulnerable populations.
