Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's, is a series of controlled movements engaging one's body and mind which focuses on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the "core" or "powerhouse" of the body which includes the abdominal muscles, the back, and the buttocks. This courses focuses on a progression of exercises from beginner to intermediate and assumes that the student has no prior knowledge of pilates exercises. Prerequisite: None. Corequisite: None.
