Student may enroll in either department, but not both, for credit.) Four hours lecture. A general introduction to the visual arts of Africa, covering diverse art forms, including sculpture, painting, performance, ceramics, textiles and architecture from antiquity through the colonial period to the present. Topics addressing the religious, cultural, social, economic and political contexts of the art will be explored. Compares arts from Africa to other world art traditions and assesses the contributions of African arts in a global context.
