(Formerly Japanese 92.) (See general education pages for the requirement this course meets.) Prerequisite: Japanese 1 or equivalent. Five hours lecture, one hour laboratory. Further development of material presented in Japanese 1. Continuation of introduction to the language and the culture of Japan. Emphasis will be on language as the primary expression of culture. Practice of four basic skills of language (speaking, listening, reading and writing) within a cultural framework. Oral practice based on understanding of the language structure. Continuation of the two Japanese syllabic writing systems, hiragana, and katakana. Start to recognize the third writing system, kanji-Sino-Japanese characters. Language laboratory practice to reinforce pronunciation, grammar, syntax, and listening skills.
