NURS 82 - Acute Fundamentals/ Medical Surgical I

Prerequisite: Nursing 81 and 81L; or 81N and 81NL; and Nursing 81P, all courses with a grade of C or better. Corequisite: Nursing 82 students must also enroll in Nursing 82L and 82P. Four hours lecture, one additional hour to be arranged in the Allied Health or Science Center Resource Center. Physical and psycho social, universal, developmental, and health deviation selfcare requisites are addressed by utilization of the nursing process and Orem's model of self-care. Therapeutic communication techniques and teaching/learning principles are applied in assisting the medical/surgical client to move toward self-care. The student will be introduced to principles of safe administration of medications by parenteral routes, fluid and electrolyte theory application, and preparation and administration of intravenous infusions. Clinical assignments will focus on the perioperative client as well as medical health deviations discussed in theory class.
