An introductory course to policing in the United States, including: the role of federal, state and local law enforcement in the criminal justice system; historical development of law enforcement in the United States; an examination of the police philosophy, organization and bureaucracy; demands placed on law enforcement officers by the public they serve; effective law enforcement strategies; police ethics and major challenges confronting law enforcement professionals; and current issues and trends in law enforcement. Prerequisites: Successful completion of CRM 110 with a grade of C- or higher; and SOC 113. Offered in the fall semester in odd-numbered years.
