This course will survey the theoretical and practical background of some major controversies within the field of biomedicine. The major controversies covered by the course can be divided into categories of "rights" topics, "controls" topics, and "resources" topics. As regards the first, students will know the issues of, and potential solutions for, fair treatment of minorities, the rights and responsibilities of patients and practitioners, and proper medical research methods. With the second, students will know the issues of, and potential solutions to, questions of social regulation of genetic research/therapy and reproductive technology. As regards the third, students will know the relevant points about, and potential solutions to, questions of allocating scarce resources and claims to health care as a r ight.
