An introduction to the art and craft of songwriting. Includes analysis of existing songs written in various styles in terms of the fundamental musical elements: rhythm, form, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, texture and text. Analytic and creative exercises and projects enable students to acquire skill in evaluating and critiquing songs and in producing original work. Prerequisite: Music major or permission of instructor
