Prerequisite: successful completion of the six hour general education communications requirement. This survey course draws upon a compilation of genres, themes, styles, and language used by various writers of African American descent. This course will also examine the ideas and literary contributions of 19th and 20th century African Americans such as Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Richard Wright, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Nikki Giovanni. This course meets three (3) of the six (6) hour humanities requirements. Substantial writing component. Fulfills state writing requirement. 3 credit hours.
