The early childhood educator working successfully with young children with disabilities must have knowledge of the various disabling conditions. With a greater understanding of the definitions for, characteristics of, and conditions associated with each disability, the early childhood educator will be better able to interact with, instruct and provide care to children with disabilities. The purpose of this course is to provide early childhood personnel working with young disabled children with a historical perspective of special education and with the State Department of Education definitions for categorical programs.
