This course focuses on the music of the Modern Period in the 20th Century. Impressionist music by Ravel and Debussy, 12 tone compositions by Schoenberg, electronic music by Stockhausen, show tunes by Gershwin, Rodgers, and other American composers, nationalistic music by Shostakovich, film music by Prokofiev and Williams, American jazz and "Tin Pan Alley" tunes are some of the areas to be considered. Through the use of recordings, video, and live concerts, students will become familiar with Barber's Adagio for Strings, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite as well as many others. Instrumentalists will engage in actual performance of music of the Modern Period. Non-instrumentalists will participate through observation, laboratory, and field experiences.
