Students will examine the philosophical and historical basis of the social welfare system. This overview of social welfare in the United States includes English antecedents and developments from the American colonial era to the Great Society. The transition era to the war on America's reluctant welfare state and current trends are explored. Developments in child welfare, public health, and mental health are highlighted to show how these changes affected the treatment of the poor and needy in America. The evolution of the social work profession and its relationship to the social welfare system is presented. Social policy and its effect on fields of practice are explored. 3 credit hours.
