This course provides the student with an orientation to the NCCC¿s PTA program¿s academic and clinical policies, and an introduction to the field of physical therapy. Topics include a historical perspective of the field of physical therapy, state practice acts, medical-professional ethics and conduct, the role of the PTA as part of the health care team, and an orientation to the psychological and social needs of patients and their families. Techniques for effective interaction and intervention between the physical therapist assistant and the patient will be emphasized. Students will be instructed in HIPAA and the rights, dignity, and individuality of the patients they encounter. The role and significance of the American Physical Therapy Association, the ADA, and the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice will be examined. This is a 10 week modular course which takes place during the first 10 weeks of the semester. (Usually offered Fall semester.) Restricted to PTA students. Prerequisites/co-requisites: PTA 110, PTA 111L, PTA 112L, BIO 213 and BIO 213L.
