Description:
The first semester of a two-semester sequence. The advanced course with emphasis on the relationship between structure and reactivity. Topics include bonding in carbon compounds, functional groups, organic acid-base reactions, nomenclature, physical properties, structure, synthesis, and reaction mechanisms for alkanes, alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes, stereochemistry, structure determination, and radical reactions. Laboratory work covers the separation techniques, instrumental analysis and microscale manipulations. (Can fulfill Sciences requirement in Associate of Science Degree programs. Students retaking this course must repeat both the lab and lecture.
