A survey of Irish literature in several genres-novels short stories, poetry, drama, essays, and criticism from the nineteenth century to the present. Students will read and critically analyze the work of major figures, such as Maria Edgeworth, W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, and Seamus Heaney, and of figures who are less well-known. Close attention will be paid to the ways in which Irish literary works respond to the pressures of Irish history and culture. A research paper is required. Prerequisite- Corequisite Prerequisite: ENG 110 College Writing I.
