This course is a survey of the history of Japan from ancient times up to the present. The class explores the different periods and transformations of Japanese society and culture, focusing on art, literature, religion, government, relations with China, Korea and the West, World War II and Japanese imperialism, the post-war economic boom, and the current global popularity of Japanese pop culture. Prerequisite: ENL101 / 3 credits.
