(Through Fall 2008; replaced by Nursing: Vocational 405 in Spring 2009) Class hours: 64-72 lecture. Limitation on Enrollment: Successful completion of the first module of the Vocational Nursing (VN) program. Corequisite: Nursing: Vocational 404L. Advisory: Completion of Biology 30. Concepts, principles, and skills that form the basis for medical-surgical nursing. Utilizing components of the nursing process, students identify needs and problems of patients during the peri- and post operative periods. Topics include: maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balances; monitoring of intravenous therapy; administration of medications; care of wounds; removal of sutures, clips, or staples; and insertion and care of tubes. Threats to respiratory and integumentary systems are explored. Leadership role and responsibilities of the VN, with focus on patient education and reporting of patient conditions. Field tripsmay be a required part of this course. 1230.20
