Course is offered only on a pass/no-pass basis. Class hours: 48-54 lecture. Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 550 as determined by the Chaffey assessment process, or completion of English 500C. Not Degree Applicable. Prepares the inexperienced writer for college level academic writing by focusing on critical thinking, reading, writing, and study skills necessary to succeed at the academic level. Five hours of supplemental instruction in a Success Center that supports this course is required, plus tutoring or other activities as recommended by instructor. 4930.21 Intensive instruction in the oral production of American English, targeted to intermediate and advanced ESL students. Focus on speaking and pronunciation skills to improve fluency and minimize accent impact imparted by the speaker's native language. Topics include: sound systems of consonants and vowels, pitch and intonation patterns, rhythm and phrasing, and sound reductions. Fourteen hours of supplemental instruction in a Success Center that supports this course is required. May be taken twice. 4930.80
