3 units; 3 hours Lecture Prerequisite: ENGL 1A/1AH/1AMC/1AMCH. Surveys African American literature from the turn of the 20th century to the present, including short stories, poetry, novels, films and criticism. Students will be thoroughly acquainted with a scope of African American authors, poets and social philosophers, and will garner the skills for deconstructing these texts and recognizing their contributions to the contextual fabric of America. Through these works, students will also gain insight into the cultural dynamics of the African Diaspora. May be offered in a Distance-Learning Format. Transfer Credit: Transfers to CSU. Transfers to UC.
