3 units; 3 hours Lecture, 2 hours Laboratory Prerequisite: CIS 81. Recommended Preparation: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 100. Presents data communication industry standards and technologies including analog and digital signaling, encoding, multiplexing, error detection and correction, circuit and packet switched networks, data link protocols, voice and digital, communications, service providers and emerging technologies. Studies the telecommunications industry, including a look at current and emerging standards and technologies. Covers national and international organizations and mechanisms for creating telecommunications standards using the OSI model and TCP/IP Internet standards. Transfer Credit: Transfers to CSU.
