(formerly History of Music in Western Civilization) 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MUS 151. This course presents a historical overview of western music from Ancient Greece to about 1750. Students will incorporate study of composer 's lives and the historical period in which they lived with score study and listening to recordings of the standard repertoire. They will develop the ability to identify a composer's work by the distinctive characteristics displayed by each composer. Students will begin to put into perspective the historical context of various pieces of music, the artistic, political, and sociological influences on composers of music, and learn to intelligently analyze and dissect different music styles.
