GER: HB (Empirical Study of Human Behavior) Prerequisite: two French courses numbered 210 or greater A descriptive analysis of the French language from the smallest linguistic units to the largest units -- from sounds, words, and sentences to discourse. Topics include: the historical development of the French language, standard vs. non-standard French, language variation and sociological factors affecting language use. May satisfy the pre-fall 2008 general education requirement in upper-level humanities. 4 credits.
