Prerequisite: ENGL 1101 This course offers an overview of the journalistic media and provides students with knowledge needed to evaluate information provided by the media critically and to understand the limitations and demands faced by journalists. The course explores the legal and ethical issues related to media coverage, the daily environment in which decisions on such issues must be made and the impact of the media on the individual and on the social and political consciousness of the community. The course includes an examination of such areas as print and broadcast journalism, advertising, photojournalism and public relations. Assignments related to campus student publications, the campus public information office and/or the campus TV channel will complement the material covered in class.
