3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CA 103 or CA 221, and Eligibility for ENGL 099 and READ 099. The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the role of an operating system in the interaction between the computer hardware components and the application software. The concept of how a computer works from power on until power off will be discussed at length, as well as the boot process. Details will be offered on how an operating system is evaluated based on user needs. While DOS will initially be used to demonstrate operating system function and resource interaction, discussion will include Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Linux, NetWare and Mac OS. There will be extensive "handson"exposure to DOS, Windows XP, and Linux. BEFORE ENROLLING students should be Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer users. Students should be able to manage disks, folders, and files using Windows Explorer. (CSU, AVC)
