3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 101. This course will examine the regional literature that has emerged from the American West, focusing on a varied selection of literary texts. Selections will explore the way concepts of the "wilderness," the "frontier," and t"West" have figured in the work ofwriters who participated in the historical experience of westward expansion and/or its contemporary aftermath. Subtopics may include the mythogenesis of the Western hero, issues of environmentalism, the transformative power of the western landscape, and the involvement of ethnic minorities in this process-particularly that of Native Americans.
