4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 099 (AVC assessment) or Completion of ENGL 097. Advisory: Eligibility for READ 099 (AVC assessment). This course reviews basic writing techniques and expands on those skills essential for producing clear, competent, and developed expository prose that exhibits critical thinking. Emphasis is placed on the process of writing, the development of a thesis, paragraph organization and development, a clearly defined essay structure, correct sentence structure and variety, and correct use of grammar and mechanics. Included is a limited approach to academic research and an introduction to the use of MLA (Modern Language Association) documentation. Students read and write extensively. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "no pass" only. (Credit cournot applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.)
