4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 097 (AVC assessment), or Completion of ENGL 095. Advisory: Completion of ESL 058, or Eligibility for READ 097 (AVC assessment). Aimed at the developing writer, this course teaches reading and writing skills essential for producing clear, competent expository prose. Special emphasis is placed on paragraph development, the organization of ideas, the composition of short essays (2-3 pages, typed), the drafting and revision process, and syntactical, grammatical, and mechanical correctness. Students read and write extensively. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "no pass" only. (Credit cournot applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.)
