3 unit 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of MOA 101, and Eligibility for ENGL 099 and READ 099. This is an introductory course in the basic principles of coding for the medical office. Major units of study include: 1) coding medical procedures using the Physicians' Current Procedural Terminology ( CPT); 2) coding diseases, mental disorders, neoplasms, pregnancy, childbirth, congenital anomalies, symptoms, signs and ill-defined conditions, injury, and poisoning using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification ( ICD9-CM); 3) coding supplies, materials and injections using the Health Care Financing Administration Common Procedure Coding System ( HCPCS) and The Red Book for NDC coding of medications and supplies; and 4) reviewing the current Medicare and State of California Medi- Cal coding billing guidelines.
