3.5 units (32.5 hours lecture, 68 hours clinic) (5 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Prerequisite: Completion of NS 102 and NS 103 or completion of NS 200 for transfer and LVN students. This course is based on Orem's Self- Care Theory as applied to the care of the adolescent and adult patient with developmental and health deviation selfcare requisites related to mental health. The concept that each patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities connected with their own mental health maintenance and restoration is presented. The course provides theory and guided clinical practice to promote an understanding of normal and pathophysiological processes which maintain or alter sound mental health and the self-care practices that promote mental well-being. The relationship of the universal self-care requisites to the developmental and health deviation self-care requisites of the adolescent and adult patient with mental illness is presented. The interrelationship between various psychological developmental theories and Orem's self-care theory will be examined. The supportive/educative role of the nurse is emphasized with the goal of fostering the self-care agency of each patient. (CSU, AVC)
